Free Pattern - The Musette Bag

The Musette Bag is the ultimate blend of style, convenience, and functionality. A Musette bag is a lightweight bag traditionally used by cyclist to carry food and drink, but also serves as a convenient shopping bag. This bag features a versatile cross-body strap that allows for hands-free carrying, while the drawstring closure ensures easy access and secure storage of your essentials. 

We have compiled a free sewing pattern and maker's guide which is now available online to download and print. The pattern is made in collaboration with the extremely talented Natasha Hua @nhua_design.

SUITABLE FABRICS

A wide range of fabrics would work for the Musette Bag, especially any light to medium weight, woven fabric which can also be used to make the drawstring and strap. Our examples here are made in the Chalk Stripe Seersucker Black and Calico (drawstring and strap made from the same fabric.)

Another option is to use a heavier fabric like a canvas or denim, this will create a stronger bag. In this case we recommend you use our cotton tapes and webbings for the drawcord and strap. Below shows the Light Drill Stone (left) with Fine Herringbone Tape 11mm for the drawstring and Cotton Strapping for the strap, and the Safari Denim (right) with Fine Herringbone Tape 11mm for the drawstring and Fine Herringbone Tape 30mm for the strap.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED

- 1m Fabric
- Scissors
- Pins
- Safety Pin
- Thread
- Sewing Machine (or hand sewing needle.)
- Musette bag paper pattern
- Musette bag maker's guide

*NOTE: this bag can also be customised with using a tape for the strap and drawstring. If this is your preferred option, you will need less fabric.
